Jewish Museum reopens
The Jewish Museum reopens September, 9 with a splendid celebration.
The new exhibition in the sensational building of Daniel Libeskind is
open to public from September, 11.
Tiergarten
The Tiergarten is Berlin's largest and most popular urban park. The
former hunting ground of the prince electors was reshaped into a park
in the 18th century. P.J. Lenné rearranged it again in the years
1833-38, adding the lakes and watercourses which are responsible for
the charm and attraction of the park. In the summer, when the weather
is good, a barbecue with the whole family in the park is a popular weekend
tour for the Berlins.
Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor)

The probably most well-known landmark of the town and its division
was errected 1788-1791 by C.G. Langhans. The Quadriga by J.G. Schadow
was set up in 1793, brought 1806 to Paris by Napoleon and was set up
on the gate again in 1814 on the tide of the wars of independence. In
the first new years nigth after the opening of the wall, when tens of
thousands celebrated here, the sculpture was damaged. Since 1991, after
restauration, it stands again on its place.
Building Site Potsdamer Platz

The square with once the most traffic of the world became fallow land
near the wall due to the division of Berlin. After opening of the wall
on the 9th of November 1989 the first new border crossing point in the
center of the town was opened here. 'The old heart of Berlin starts
to beat again', noticed the major of Berlin at that time, Walter Momper.
One of the largest building places of the world is located here since
fall 1993. Among other companies, the Daimler-Benz subsidiary Debis,
ABB and Sony build here. About the turn of the millennium all construction
projects will be finished.
In the background (with the white sign) one can see the Weinhaus Huth,
one of the few remaining buildings from the pre-war time.
Victory Column (Siegessäule)
On 2nd of September 1873 the 61.5 m high victory column (Siegessäule)
was inaugurated at the Königsplatz (near the later built Reichstag)
in memory of Prussian's victories over Denmark (1864), Austria-Hungary
(1864), and France (1871). Within the scope of the reshaping of the
square the Siegessäule was dismantled and re-erected at the Großer
Stern. The statue of the victory goddess Viktoria (35 t weight) was
created by the sculptor F. Drake.
National Opera (Staatsoper)

The building, erected 1741-43 in the style of a Corinthian temple,
was totally destroyed by a fire in 1843 and afterwards rebuilt by C.F.
Langhans. Even not yet finished it was opened on 12/7/1742. Since 1955
the building which was heavily damaged during the war shines in the
old beauty. The interior was last renovated in 1986 and has space for
1400 persons.
Unter den Linden
On the photo left one can see parts of the main building of Humboldt
university, and beneath, with the Dorian columns, the new guard room
(Neue Wache), built 1816-18 by Schinkel. Since 1993 the 'Neue Wache'
is the main memorial site of Germany (Zentrale Gedenkstätte der
Bundesrepublik Deutschland). Right of it, in the former arsenal (Zeughaus),
built 1695-1706, the German historical museum (Deutsches Historisches
Museum) is located. In the background one can see the Berlin cathedral
and the TV tower.
